You Can Get It Matters2

YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU REALLY WANT

...BUT YOU MUST TRY, TRY AND TRY, TRY AND TRY

One of the true global superstars of music is Jamaican artist Jimmy Cliff. This ska and reggae legend has penned many hits during his career – from ‘Many Rivers to Cross’ to ‘Wonderful World, Beautiful People’. Perhaps his best-known track though is 1970’s ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’. Although the original version by Cliff himself was popular, it was Desmond Dekker’s version released just a few weeks later that really made waves. Dekker’s voice and the positivity of the song’s message saw it climb to Number 2 in the UK music charts in that year.

This tune is not just fun to listen too though – it also contains an inspirational message for any entrepreneur. But how does a song about overcoming all odds link to the start-up world?

DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR VISION

The key to taking inspiration from this song as a business owner is listening to the lyrics closely. Take the chorus for example which talks about getting something if you want it badly enough and never giving up. As Jimmy Cliff says, if you “try, try and try – you’ll succeed at last”. This is a crucial message to really take on-board for any start-up owner. Whatever happens, you must keep going and keep trying. If you do, you will succeed in the end and your hard work will pay off. Maybe you will have one or two ventures failing along the way but… you’ll succeed at last!

A MESSAGE FOR ALL BUSINESSES

While the message of this song is particularly true for new businesses who are trying to get established, it also resonates with any size of business too. This is because any project could hit bumps along the road. It is essential to not let these issues make you give up. Being strong enough to find a way past any problems is a vital ingredient to success. Even the most successful organisations had to start somewhere and had to deal with things they did not expect. If you can show the desire to get what you want from your business and the resilience to get there, nothing can stop you.

INVESTMENT IS ALSO KEY TO GROWTH

For many start-ups and SMEs, it is also a good idea to think about securing investment to help drive growth. While desire, hunger and resilience are very important, you also need the right amount of capital. YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU REALLY WANT (LYRICS)

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

But you must try, try and try, try and try

You’ll succeed at last, mmh, yeah

Persecution you must fear

Win or lose you’re about to get your share

Got your mind set on a dream

You can get it though hard it may seem now

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

But you must try, try and try, try and try

You’ll succeed at last, I know it

Listen, Rome was not built in a day

Opposition will come your way

But the harder the battle, you see

Is the sweeter the victory now

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

But you must try, try and try, try and try

You’ll succeed at last

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want

But you must try, try and try, try and try

You’ll succeed at last

I know it

(You can get it if you really want) don’t I show it

(You can get it if you really want) don’t give up now

(You can get it if you really want) keep on trying
